An appropriate nonlinear formulation of elasticity is reduced through the usual assumptions of bending theory. It is shown that buckling problems for uniform straight columns may be studied, to the degree of approximation in bending theory, with a strain energy function for the column given by the sum of two terms concerning (a) the column center line strain and (b) the column center line change of curvature.
