Finite Element Analyses are performed to investigate castor capsule hulling under two different loading conditions. One is a compressive load applied at the castor stem toward to the castor center. The other is a compressive load applied at the middle portion of the castor capsule, which is perpendicular to the first loading direction. Detailed stress and rapture studies are focused on capsule mesocarp and seed epicarp. Also, experiments are carried out to validate the finite element models. There is a good agreement between the finite element results and the experimental measurements. This study can provide in-depth understanding for capsule hulling mechanism and hulling machine design.
