Abstract

When fly fishing, a flyline is used to transport and launch a lure to the location of fish. Equations which describe the motion of a level flyline during the forward cast has been developed for the case of line release from the rod. After the work input phase, the cast was considered to be composed of loop formation, line unrolling, loop dissipation and final descent phases. The work-energy equation and Newton’s law were used to generate a finite element computational model for the forward cast in dimensionless form.
