Abstract

Fuzzy set theory has been found to be useful in representing inherent imprecision when a component or system is analyzed. The concepts of fuzzy set theory were earlier incorporated by the authors in an existing constraint manager developed at The Ohio State University. This paper describes a simplified computational approach to solve engineering design problems with fuzzy design variables in an interactive fashion. In an attempt to reduce the time and computational effort involved in fuzzy calculations, a modification in the Vertex Method is used. A comparison of computational time and effort for both the original method and the modified method is presented.
